Tamara Magel, an award-winning international designer based in the Hamptons, creates luxurious, contemporary interiors that are enhanced by organic and whimsical elements. Her portfolio includes vast coastal residences, chic urban apartments as well as more traditional country residences. As described by the designer, many of her projects “evoke the enduring character of a fine European country manor.”
In 2000, Tamara opened her first interior design studio in Washington D.C. after having worked successfully as a consultant. Her luxe custom furnishings, paint, and bedding are showcased in a showroom she launched in 2011 in Soho. Tamara is one of a new wave of talented designers sought after by both homeowners and the press. Her exquisite spaces have been featured in Architectural Digest, Elle Décor, and the New York Times, among others.
We recently talked to Tamara about the exquisite house she designed on Butter Lane in Bridgehampton.
You have incorporated the most stunning lighting fixtures; can you tell us a little about the chandeliers in this project?
Sure, they are from Apparatus Studio. Lighting in a big house is very important as there are a lot of empty upward spaces. Each light was carefully chosen to add volume. The entry foyer and dining fixtures are in silver finish with glass balls made in NYC.
How does beach living inform your design?
I find I use more natural materials and more comfortable seating, and durability is a concern due to lots of guests and sand!
How do you choose artwork or photography for your projects?
I don’t choose art to go with an interior; instead I just choose art I love. I like a little whimsy and color in my art since my interiors are very classic. I love using art consultants so that the art is also of value in the future and it’s a win for the interiors and for the client.
The wooden coffee table in the master bedroom is a lovely organic touch, are you drawn to natural elements?
Absolutely! They have a calming effect on us. I try to only use natural materials.
Are there designers from the past and present who have inspired you?
Yes, Christian Liaigre, Joseph Dirand, and Axel Vervoordt.
Do you have a favorite room in the house?
The living room! I love the mix of textures, the custom fireplace I designed, the amazing horsehair sconces, and the way all the elements play off one another.
How would you describe your design style?
Classic, chic, and organic.
How do you enhance the interior by connecting to the outdoors and the landscape?
I use colors that complement rather than fight the outdoors, such as natural blues, greys, and greens.
What are your favorite places to eat, shop, and play in the Hamptons?
I love MONC XIII as the owner is constantly curating beautiful vintage furniture as well as finding new vendors, usually from Europe, before anyone else. It makes my job easier and her taste is exquisite. I buy vintage furniture as well as the best ceramics and accessories there.
Cove Hollow is a gem. The food is exceptional, and it’s small and quaint with a very down to earth vibe. You can have a summer dinner without it being as hectic as other places out East. The Beacon we go to for the view besides the food. Every night is an amazing sunset, great for early evening cocktails and dinner on the water in Sag Harbor.
