Keynote Speakers Included Candice Bergen and Norma Kamali
The Decoration & Design Building (DDB) hosted its Fall Market, DESIGN 2020, at the iconic headquarters of all things design in New York. The two-day market blended a retrospective glance at design by the decades and an examination of how the 2010s completely changed our industry, with a peek forward at what to expect in the next decade of design. Owner, Charles S. Cohen opened the two-day trade-only event with his perspective of the future of design resulting from the design headquarters’ carefully curated programming and discussion. The Fall Market included six star-studded Keynotes and one Special Program, 20 In-Showroom Programs, four Cocktail Receptions, 11 Experiential Events, and over 100 Open Houses. Teasing out the pillar principles that will continue to define the design conversation – technology, sustainability, social responsibility, innovation, and collaboration among them – the all-access two-day event provided captivating insight, practical intelligence, and actionable advice as we collectively braced for the profound impact these topics created in the years to come.

- Keynote: IF WALLS COULD TALK: Historic House, Modern Family Restoring Landmark Properties at Stark, Suite 1102. Celebrated actor, author and activist Candice Bergen, recipient of this year’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Medal from the Municipal Art Society and two-time Kips Bay Decorator Show House designer Scott Sanders held a lively conversation moderated by designer and author Steven Stolman. Topics covered were: Ms. Bergen’s several landmarked homes, her passion for preservation (and more!) and a sneak peek at a spectacular landmarked Palm Beach estate that Mr. Sanders has just restored and enlivened for a young family. Following the presentation, there was a prosecco reception, and a Candice Bergen book signing.
- Special Program: Sustainability and Wellness are the Future of Design, at Gloster, Suite 1601. Interiors magazine Editor-in-Chief Erika Heet held an enlightening discussion on the rise of sustainability and wellness and their influences on the design industry. They looked beyond yoga rooms and green furnishings to the true core of sustainable building and design, with experts who are taking a fresh perspective on integrating wellness into their design repertoire and process. Guests discovered why these holistic tenets are integral to design’s future with panelists: Adam Rolston, Creative Director of INC Studio, the firm behind the luxe, eco-friendly 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge; emerging design talent Laurence Carr and iconic fashion designer, disruptor and wellness advocate, Norma Kamali.

- KEYNOTE PRESENTATION 1 – Tech Talks at Upper Story, presented by Pollack | Weitzner. Avenue magazine Design Contributor Sabine Rothman delved into the technology wave and how the design industry is adapting with innovator, author and award- winning product designer Lori Weitzner, the CEO of “human refueling” tech-based service Tune.Studio Kyle Godfrey-Ryan, and designer Arianne Biton from M Moser the firm behind the design of Google’s New York Headquarters.
- KEYNOTE PRESENTATION 2 – Home Away From Home, at Fabricut, Suite 915. Brittany Chevalier McIntyre, Executive Editor, Luxe Interiors + Design, and influential designers Kendall Wilkinson, Tina Ramchandani, Rush Jenkins and Klaus Baer held an engaging conversation on designing breathtaking vacation homes, followed by a book signing.
- KEYNOTE PRESENTATION 3 – The Global Future of Design, at Lee Jofa, Suite 234. The distinct characteristics that define design styles from around the world are no longer exclusively available to travelers. Now everyone on the planet can access inspiration and products from the furthest reaches of the map with a single click. House & Garden Editor in Chief Hatta Byng and well-traveled designer and citizen of the World Robert Couturier with Stephen Elrod, the Creative Director for Lee Jofa and Brunschwig & Fils explored these previously uncharted territories and unprecedented accessibility.

- KEYNOTE PRESENTATION 1 – Clients Aren’t the Only Needy Ones — Giving Back in Interior Design, at KnollStudio with Knoll Luxe, Suite 1523. Beyond the showhouse circuit, charities of all kinds are constantly seeking interior design and architecture related skills and expertise. Knoll’s Senior Vice President of Communications David Bright, designer John Eason, Alpha Workshops Executive Director Edward Farrell, and Spread PR Principle Tyler Hamilton Larmee discussed professional engagement in charity work, with interior designer and philanthropist Jarret Yoshida moderating. Senior marketing manager for DDB Alyssa Abrams opened the presentation.

In the last decade, media as we once knew it has experienced an earth-shaking shift from glossy magazines and celebrity endorsements to social media and the rise of the influencer. The design industry is no exception, simultaneously skewing the public’s perception and shining the spotlight on the ever-evolving definition of “home”. One way or another, be it designer, client, or design company… we’re all feeling the influencer effect! HL Group’s Vice President of Digital, Renee Ogaki hosted a candid conversation with design blog pioneer Quintessence’s Stacey Bewkes, influencer turned Founder and CEO of Clare Paint, Nicole Gibbons, and design TV originator Vern Yip, followed by a book signing of Vern Yip’s Vacation at Home.
