Dr. Gregory A. Beroza, a prominent veterinarian and equine surgeon, transitioned from treating all breeds of horses to filming their multi-disciplinary activities and he is enthusiastic about both roles. His story reflects his love of horses and includes all forms of equestrian sport, from show jumping to polo to racing, and many more…
While growing up in Hempstead, Long Island, New York, young Greg Beroza felt a thrill whenever the family car passed Belmont Park Racetrack. He told his parents, “Someday I’m going to work there”, and his prediction came true.
Over the years he biked to local Bethpage State Park to watch others ride their horses, dreaming one day of owning his own. He became fascinated with polo matches taking place at the world-class Meadowbrook Polo Club and envied those who enjoyed such competition. Throughout high school, Beroza dedicated himself to studying to become a veterinary surgeon responsible for the care of these amazing animals. However, even then he couldn’t envision that one day he would obtain his veterinary degree, become a double board-certified equine surgeon, own his own horses and a polo club, open an office at Belmont Park, develop a 24/7 full-service equine hospital on Long Island, and work on some of the best equine athletes and for the most prominent equestrian patrons of his era.
Dr. Beroza started cooling out recently exercised racehorses at Belmont Park in 1971 for prominent trainer Johnny Campo, Sr. Campo subsequently introduced him to leading racetrack veterinarian Dr. Mark Gerard, who had the greatest professional impact on the future veterinary surgeon. Dr. Gerard tapped Beroza as his assistant to help treat the immortal Secretariat, the horse that successfully campaigned through the 1973 Triple Crown series. Secretariat is still considered to be the GOAT of all thoroughbred racehorses. This experience was one of the key motivational moments that solidified the local Hempstead, Long Island native’s passion to pursue a career as a veterinary surgeon.
Beroza’s background was exceptionally underwhelming having come from a neighboring middle class residential area with no relatives or friends connected to horse racing or horses in general. When asked why and when he chose to be a veterinarian, Beroza would reply. “I knew from my earliest days that I had a passion for horses. The career chose me.” Nothing was going to prevent him from applying his love of science and medicine from fulfilling his dream job.
Admission to the limited number of veterinary schools was nearly impossible without being a straight A student and needing hands-on equestrian experience and influential promoters. As a Hempstead High School Junior, Beroza’s guidance counselor advised him to, “pick something more attainable”. After an exhausting career pursuing his goals, Beroza made it into the limited elite class of veterinarians that are board certified in both equine surgery and practice.
Beroza studied and subsequently worked alongside several of the best equine surgeons of his day including Belmont Park’s legendary surgeon Dr. William O. Reed and his highly regarded practice partner Dr. Chuck Allen. Beroza’s list of connections includes clients, patients, and auxiliary equestrian collaborators and it reads like a Who’s Who of the equine veterinary industry. After founding his private veterinary hospital on the grounds of Belmont Park, he expanded his professional availability, equipment, and services by creating the Long Island Equine Medical Center PC in Huntington, Long Island. He bought, rebuilt, and expanded upon the grounds of the historic West Hills Polo Club, making it both a nationally prominent arena polo facility and an equally prominent veterinary medical center with its 24/7 full- services of scheduled and emergency coverage.
During his many years of academic studies, Beroza authored numerous ‘peer reviewed’ scientific articles. While in private practice, Beroza continued his journalistic interests by publishing articles for lay-public magazines, and he held continuing educational seminars at his hospital. At Belmont Park Racetrack he counseled prominent television racing commentator and on-premises trainer Frank Wright about important health concerns affecting racehorses. Wright subsequently encouraged Beroza to create his own media career. After having spent the majority of his fifty plus years in love with and dedicated to the horse industry as an accomplished equine surgeon, Beroza subsequently transitioned into producing his highly successful equine-related video broadcasts which are seen on his YouTube Channel.
Dr. Beroza trademarked his pen name HorseDoc® which he used regularly throughout the 1980s. He lectured about many equine related topics, calling his discussions ‘Talking Horses’®. Beroza then bundled all his media productions under his journalistic network called WuzUpDoc® Media. To date, he has 200,000 subscribers viewing his ‘Talking Horses’® YouTube Channel of over 134 broadcasts. That lifetime audience has now viewed his productions over five million times (www.YouTube.com/@TalkingHorses/videos and is also accessible via his website www.WuzUpDoc.com) .
Dr. Beroza continues to see equine patients and consult with clients seeking his advice. His dedication to studying, analyzing, and now broadcasting about a growing number of horses and their human partners has been an ever-growing passion. He earned recognition several times at international film festivals and continues to expand his journalistic media interests through his short documentaries. Beroza is often found at racetracks, showgrounds, dressage arenas, and additional premier equestrian competitions primarily near his two media studios in Centerport, Long Island, New York and Delray Beach, Florida. He attends professional veterinary and media events across the country and participates in international Film Festivals throughout the year.
Dr. Beroza is quick to remind his friends and audience that he is busier than he was when he only practiced veterinary medicine. He now feels an equal obligation to be a proficient documentary journalist. Some of his video broadcasts include coverage of the Belmont Stakes, Travers Stakes, Hambletonian Stakes, Meadowlands Pace, Hampton Classic Grand Prix, multiple Grand Prix events at Wellington, United States Polo Association Open Championships, Pegasus Stakes, Florida Derby, Jockeys and Jeans Benefits, plus many other noteworthy equestrian events and film festival coverage, etc.
As a veterinarian, Dr. Beroza’s professional areas of practice included nearly every venue of horse and animal activities such as racing, showing, jumping, dressage, polo, draft and miniature horses, mounted police, circus, zoos, and involved nearly every breed of horse. His 24/7 full-service Long Island Equine Medical Center allowed him to utilize nearly every major diagnostic and surgical technique available during his practice era. He was ahead of his time in that he was amongst the pioneers who introduced many of these procedures, equipment, and therapies such as surgical arthroscopy, anesthetic pulse oximetry, deworming for tapeworms, shockwave therapy, therapeutic ultrasound, and diagnostic nuclear scintigraphy. Those advances were then revolutionary and are now commonly integrated into most of today’s high-end full-service equine hospitals.
It is unique to have a local kid born not far from one of the world’s most prominent racetracks be able to matriculate through professional rigors to become one of the country’s best equine surgeons and then catapult himself in his later years into an internationally recognized documentary journalist. Beroza best sums it up, “My success is fueled by my passion for horses and the people like me who work with them. None of this would have been possible without the support of my dear friends, clients, family, and mentors who encouraged me to ‘follow my dreams”.
Dr. Beroza enjoyed all the challenges and opportunities that veterinary practice, especially surgery, offered. He counselled many prominent equestrian clients among a multitude of equine disciplines, worked on several of the best horses of his era, collaborated with the greatest veterinarians and medical specialists of his day, and enjoyed comradery with public lay-journal publications. He was a regular guest on-air media contributor to the major television networks and hosted his own radio show for Hofstra University’s WRHU 88.7FM, where he still serves as a community broadcast contributor.
DrB aka ‘HorseDoc’® looks forward to thoroughbred racing returning to his favorite Long Island, New York venue at Belmont Park Racetrack in 2026. He is equally excited for Belmont Park to be hosting in his backyard the prestigious Breeders’ Cup World Championships in 2027. Although he is at home on Long Island, Beroza is equally engaged in his winter coverage of major equestrian sports in Florida and is a regular participant in Film Festivals across the country.
