Editor’s Choice: Best sand and water in the Caribbean

Your Own Private Luxury Oasis on Peter Island

Listen to the live steel drum band playing familiar tunes on the pure white sands of Deadman’s Beach. Sip on a homemade rum punch and gazing at swaying palm tress and pelicans diving into the turquoise waters… fantasy? No, it’s the secluded, seductive, sensational Peter Island.

As the temperatures begin to fall and you start to daydream about escaping the cold and dreary days of winter, consider this: your own private island smack-dab in the middle of the visually unrivaled British Virgin Islands (BVI). One of a very few privately-owned pieces of paradise in the BVI, Peter Island Resort & Spa remains blissfully remote, regenerative and peaceful, occupying only 300 of the small island’s 1,800 acres while offering luxury on all levels. And, the water is clear – crystal clear. It’s a beach lover’s sanctuary.

The resort’s grounds are luxurious and offer five private beaches, each more beautiful than the next, sprinkled with swathes of wild sea grapes and coconuts. Wildlife and sea life surrounding the island include the Green Sea Turtle, Horse-Eyed Jacks, Butterfly Fish, Juvenile Blue Tang, Starlet Fire Coral, Hiding Flame Scallops, Christmas Tree Worms, among other natural wonders.

Pristine White Sand & Turquoise Waters

Located south of Tortola between Norman Island and Salt Island with Dead Man’s Chest just north of Peter Island, early visitors are said to have included Christopher Columbus, Sir Francis Drake, various German planters and privateers, and the famous pirate, Blackbeard. Blackbeard is thought to have buried treasure on nearby Dead Chest Island where he marooned his men with only a sword and a cask of rum. They later washed up on Peter Island’s “Deadman’s” Bay.

Romantic & Restful Rooms
With sweeping views of the turquoise seas and white sand beaches, guestrooms and suites boast high ceilings, gigantic bathrooms with deep soaking jacauzzi tubs for two, private patios (some with hammocks) and for product aficionados Natura Bisse toiletries from Spain.

Splurge on a Beach Front Junior Suite. As noted, guests here are sparse and that’s exactly why you settled on this corner of paradise. Go (almost) all in … we’ll explain what taking the true dive means later.

The suites are not only secluded and away from the hustle and bustle of the dock, gift shop and eateries, but they will draw out the voyeur in you. Relax on your patio or lounge in your private hammock and assess the situation on the storybook Deadman’s Beach. From your suite, you can determine the BEST place to soak up soleil, people watch, and properly position for the best cabana service (tip: fish tacos are an absolute must once you make it to the beach).

For the “all in” experience, Peter Island Resort also offers three exquisite private villas with panoramic views, private pools, luxury amenities and bespoke service, as requested. Guests at the Crow’s Nest and Falcon’s Nest villas have access to personal staff, including a chef, housekeeper, chauffeur, and butler.

Falcon's Nest Estate

Falcon’s Nest is the most storied of the trifecta, and a frequent choice of the A-list.
Perched high atop one of the island’s most picturesque bluffs, this crown jewel overlooks White Bay Beach with views of Norman Island and distant St. John. A Barcelona-style villa estate consisting of three separate residences with six spacious suites, seven baths and three half baths, Falcon’s Nest spans a total of 21,645 interior square feet. It even has its own three-story waterfall with a grotto, grilling gazebo with a swim-up wet bar, an infinity-edge pool, dipping pool and large outdoor whirlpool. It’s a wowza.
