In 2018, Summer Stewart launched a sustainable athleisure brand focused on providing fashion-forward ecologically sound clothing, marrying her love of fashion with her love for planet Earth. Her goal is to make classic athleisure with designer details for the fashion-forward babe.
You can see the latest Summer Stewart designs at the launch party on Saturday, August 31, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., 478 W Lake Drive, Montauk. It’s free and open to the public.
Social Life sat down with Summer to learn more about the inspiration behind her phenomenal designs.
How did you get into the world of fashion?
Growing up I always had a very entrepreneurial spirit and a keen love of fashion. At fourteen, I was cast in an Abercrombie campaign, which launched me into the world of fashion. I began modeling and quickly moved to New York to pursue all things fashion. I met Richie Rich and convinced him to sponsor me for an internship with Heatherette. I began to develop my love for fashion and chose to leave modeling to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology later that year.
What was the driving force behind founding an ecologically sound clothing brand?
Authenticity is at the center of everything in my life. After being in fashion for over 15 years, I have watched the industry adapt to new standards to support our ever-changing environment. Working in fashion I saw firsthand how damaging the industry can be to our planet. I’ve always reflected on my own footprint and have been mindful of how I can improve. I want to show that fashion can become a part of the solution by using recycled materials.
Do you have plans to expand into other types of fashion?
I am definitely open to expanding into other areas of fashion as we grow. I think the most important aspect of our brand is to stay true to our customer. We want to fulfill a need in the marketplace for fashion-forward athleisure that you can wear during your workout or at brunch with your besties! My favorite part about our designs is that I can pair them with my favorite handbag, hoops, and heels to be prepared for yoga, followed by a night out on the town.
Do you have a favorite piece?
It’s so hard to choose, especially with this collection. I have a go-to piece to wear depending on my mood. If I’m in a rush to get to yoga, it’s the Venice set in black, or if I’m heading to an event with friends, I’ll throw on the Turn Up the Heat body suit with a blazer. Sometimes I just want to chill with my boyfriend, and I know I’ll be cozy in the Sk8te or Dye set. It’s truly a labor of love and I can’t choose!
Oprah’s “I love bread.” I love bread too, Oprah. I also love pizza, pasta, and french fries. I try to live a healthy lifestyle, balancing my love of carbs with my love of working out!
